Terms of service

These terms apply to your use of Chess Next Move (www.chessnextmove.com, “the site”), run by Lestial Ltd (“we”, “us”). By using the site you agree to them. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the site.

1. The site

Chess Next Move is a free tool for setting up chess positions and getting move suggestions from a chess engine. The engine runs in your browser, so its speed depends on your device. The site is funded by ads. An account is optional.

We may change, suspend or stop any part of the site at any time, without notice. We have no obligation to keep it available or to offer any particular feature.

2. Accounts

You can create an account with an email address and password, or sign in with Google. Give accurate details, keep your password and devices secure, and tell us at support@chessnextmove.com if you think someone else has used your account. You may delete your account at any time. We may suspend or delete an account that breaks these terms. What we store for an account is described in our privacy policy.

3. Engine suggestions are not guaranteed

Suggestions and evaluations come from computer programs searching for a limited time. They can be wrong, incomplete or different from one run to the next. They are for study and entertainment. Don’t rely on them for anything where a mistake would cost you something.

4. Fair play

Using an engine during a game is cheating under the rules of chess federations, tournaments and online chess platforms. Don’t use the site to get help in a game you are playing, whether over the board, online or by correspondence, unless the rules of that game allow it. You alone are responsible for following those rules.

5. Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the site in a way that breaks the law or the rights of others;
  • send automated requests to the site in volumes that burden it, or try to disrupt it, break its security or reach parts of it you are not meant to;
  • click on ads, or cause others to, in order to inflate impressions or clicks;
  • present the site, or a copy of it, as your own, or suggest that we endorse you.

Section 7 describes what you may do with the open-source software the site includes; nothing in this section limits it.

6. Our content

The site’s name, logo, design and text belong to us or our licensors. Apart from the open-source parts in section 7, you may not copy or reuse them without our permission, beyond what the law allows. Chess positions and moves are not ours: what you set up and analyse is yours to use as you like.

7. Open-source software

The site includes open-source software, each part under its own licence. Those licences give you rights that these terms do not restrict:

  • Stockfish, the main engine, built for the browser by stockfish.js: GNU General Public License v3.
  • chessground, the board, by lichess.org: GNU General Public License v3 or later.
  • GarboChess, the engine used while Stockfish loads and for positions Stockfish cannot analyse: BSD 3-Clause License.
  • chess.js, the move rules: BSD 2-Clause License.
  • Piece sets from lichess.org: cburnett (Colin M.L. Burnett, GPLv2+ / CC BY-SA 3.0), merida (Armando Hernández Marroquín, GPLv2+) and kosal (philatype, CC BY 4.0).

8. Ads and other services

Ads on the site are chosen and served by Google. We don’t control or endorse what they advertise, and your dealings with advertisers are between you and them. The site also links to other services (the feedback form, Facebook and X), which have their own terms. How the site uses cookies and data is explained in our privacy policy.

9. Feedback

If you send us ideas or feedback, we may use them to improve the site without any obligation to you. Please don’t send anything you want to keep confidential.

10. No warranty

The site is provided free of charge, “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we give no warranties of any kind, express or implied, including that the site will be accurate, available, uninterrupted, free of errors or fit for a particular purpose.

11. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any indirect, incidental, special or consequential loss, or for loss of data, games, rating points, prizes, profits or opportunities, arising from your use of the site or from relying on its suggestions. Because the site is free, our total liability to you for any claim about it is limited to the amount you paid us to use it, which is nothing.

Nothing in these terms excludes or limits liability that cannot be excluded or limited by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud. If you are a consumer, you keep the rights that the law of your country gives you and that a contract cannot take away.

12. Changes to these terms

We may update these terms, for example when the site gains new features. The date at the top shows the latest version. If you keep using the site after a change, the new terms apply from then on.

13. Governing law

These terms are governed by the law of the country where Lestial Ltd is registered, and its courts hear any dispute about them. If you are a consumer living elsewhere, you also keep the protection of the mandatory rules of your country, and you may bring a claim in its courts.
